The Reconstruction
After you live with someone and then move out, you have to divvy up the stuff. This is about mailing off a box of stuff that really belonged with her. Fortunately we didn’t have a kid together – Nathaniel refers to her younger half-brother who was a talented artist (probably still is, I dunno).
The Reconstruction – listen
by Geordie Keitt, 1999
-
Girl looks like you did it, my heart finally broke today
Been a long time coming, been even longer if you weren’t so brave
You called out of the blue to talk about what went wrong
And I’ve seen them reconstruct the mighty dinosaur from one tiny little bone
-
And I’m packing up a box with Nathaniel’s crayon drawings today
I linger on the one with the big balloons upon it, so gracefully at liberty to fly
I don’t allow myself to spend too long upon it, just place it in the box there with the other ones
You say he misses me and seems a bit confused about where I’ve gone
Well I’ve seen them reconstruct the mighty dinosaur from one tiny little bone
-
And I’m packing up a box with Nathaniels crayon drawings today
We finally decided that they’d mean more to you than to me
Why should we ever have to make decisions like that anyway?
I know it’s hard to tell him that I won’t be there for Christmas anymore
-
(Chorus)
-
But you can tell him we’re where we need to be, and nothing needs to be done
And everything’s all right, and the reconstruction simply carries on
-
Now I’m packing up a box with Nathaniel’s crayon drawings today
It’ll probably be while before both of us have really finished letting go
But that I believe that time performs a miracle of healing upon everyone
An I’ve seen them reconstruct the mighty dinosaur from one tiny little bone
And the reconstruction simply carries on
